Journalist Training in Leuser Landscape

A 3-day Journalist Training Workshop was held in the Leuser Landscape from February 26-28, 2016 in Banda Aceh. This workshop was attended by 36 journalists from various print, television, radio, and online media outlets from both within and outside Banda Aceh. In addition, a panel of expert journalists including Adi Warsidi/TEMPO, Chaideer Mahyuddin/AFP, Davi Mashury/KompasTV, and Muhammad Nizar/Green Journalist were also present for this event.

During the workshop, speakers shared their knowledge, experience, and passion with participants, which consisted mostly of young, up-and-coming journalists. The all day workshop educated participants about environmental journalism and related writing techniques, as well as effective photo and video use. Although only 3 days in duration, this workshop aimed to significantly increase journalists’ capacity and role in advocating for forestry and environmental issues in the Leuser Landscape. The last day of the workshop concluded by selecting the best candidate to participate in a short field trip. This field trip was meant to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Leuser Landscape, recognized globally as the last place where 5 key species reside together, source of water for millions of people in Aceh and North Sumatra, home to valuable ecosystems for local communities, and an area that must be managed wisely to mitigate the threat of disaster.

Through this workshop, it was hoped that the knowledge acquired will spur meaningful impact and ultimately contribute to reducing land-based greenhouse gas emissions and conserving biodiversity.
