JAKARTA, May 10, 2016 – USAID LESTARI signed its first Public-Private Partnership (PPP) agreement today with the private sector company PT Kampung Kearifan Indonesia, the owner of the JAVARA brand, to support the development of organic cacao in Aceh province.
PPP is a partnership tool utilized by LESTARI in order to align the goals and interests of the business and public sectors to achieve socially and environmentally responsible objectives that contribute to sustainable development. This is achieved through engaging with the private sector to identify and develop sustainable livelihood strategies for communities. LESTARI’s PPPs are also in line with the overall objective of the project to support the Government of Indonesia to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and conserve biodiversity in carbon rich and biologically significant forest and mangrove ecosystems.
Cacao value chain development represents a low emission development strategy that can bring desirable benefits for the farmers, the cacao business, and the environment. It is hoped that this cooperation can expand markets, create access to technology, and develop sustainable initiatives while reducing pressure on forests and the biodiversity resources that they harbor by increasing the incomes and job opportunities for people dependent on forests.
